Since 1971
Sprintcars developed from Super Modifieds of the 60s and 70s, with the NSW Super Modified Association of NSW evolving into the Sprintcar Association of NSW (SANSW), home of these 900+HP fire breathing monsters that continue to bring fans to the fence watching dirt fly in awe and excitement.
Some of the heroes that carved a niche into the NSW dirt in earlier eras are pictured below racing at some of the iconic NSW venues of yesteryear like Sydney Showground, Parramatta Raceway, Liverpool Raceway and Newcastle Motordrome.
Like no other
Sprintcar racing evolved out of the automobile era of the 1900s on the dirt ovals of the USA, finding its footprint through the 60s and 70s muscle car period in a number of countries including Australia. It is known around the world as one of the most raw forms of motorsport with massive horsepower engines in cars that weigh only 600kg (1200 lbs), racing on huge tyres and with aerodynamic wings to hold them to the ground.
Now put 24 of the monsters on the track in the A main, its a miracle their open wheels and aggressive stance avoids disaster for the most part.
Truly an amazing spectacle of speed, brute strength, finesse, colour and emotion.
SANSW heroes
Over time, many driver’s domiciled with SANSW have become champions in their own right, with 10 different drivers crowned with the coveted National number 1, some on multiple occasions.
A number of these Australian superstars have gone on to forge stellar careers in the USA. These superstars combined with the many formidable weekly racers who hold their own with the best, have made racing with SANSW one of the toughest arenas in sprintcar racing around the world.
